Ranchi, Sept. 4 -- union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale on Friday said reservation could be ended only after the caste system was abolished.

"If the caste system is abolished, we are also ready to give up reservation," Athawale told reporters at the State Guest House in Morabadi here.

He said the demand to end reservation was not justified as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes continued to face social discrimination.

Athawale said SCs and STs accounted for around 25 per cent of the country's population, while Other Backward Classes constituted about 52 per cent.

He said these sections together accounted for around 77 per cent of the population but received 49.5 per cent reservation.
