Hyderabad, June 30 -- Distinguished Scientist Jagannath Nayak has been appointed as Director General (Missiles & Strategic Systems) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with effect from July 1, succeeding U Raja Babu, who is retiring on superannuation.

Currently serving as Director of the Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), Nayak has over 35 years of experience in defence research and is known for his contributions to indigenous avionics, guided missile technologies and directed energy weapons.

As Director of CHESS, he led the development, field testing and transfer of technology of India's first Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system.
