Rome, May 21 -- Italy has asked the EU to impose sanctions on Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir after videos surfaced of him mocking the pro-Palestinian flotilla activists detained by Israeli forces.

The controversy erupted after Ben-Gvir posted videos on Wednesday, where he appeared to taunt the flotilla activists who were intercepted by Israeli forces while attempting to breach its heavy naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces had earlier stopped vessels belonging to the Global Sumud Flotilla this week in different parts of the Mediterranean Sea, detaining around 430 activists.
