Tehran, Sept. 20 -- After the UN Security Council voted not to permanently lift economic sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme, Tehran has vowed not to bow to outside pressure, and warned of a decisive response, raising the prospect of a sharp escalation in its nuclear posture.

Speaking on state television, President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran would not "surrender or bow to excessive demands" after the council vote, which opponents of the motion characterised as a move to trigger the UN's so-called snapback mechanism.

On Friday, a UNSC resolution to block the sanctions fell by a vote of four to nine, meaning sanctions will return by September 28 if no significant deal is reached beforehand.
