Tehran, Aug. 7 -- Iran's lawmakers are reviewing a preliminary bill that could significantly reshape the "rules governing traffic" through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes. The proposed bill if passed by the Iranian Parliament, will establish a strategic framework for managing security, navigation, and economic activity in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
The preliminary 11-article proposal would give Iranian authorities expanded powers over maritime traffic, including navigation guidance, inspection of shipping routes, environmental monitoring, assessment of vessel eligibility and coordination of maritime services.
