Tehran, June 28 -- Iran has accused Italy of playing a "clear and direct" role in the US-Israeli military attack that was launched on Feb 28 against the Islamic Republic after NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte revealed that hundreds of U.S. military aircraft operated from American bases in Italy during the conflict.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Rome's admission that it provided "technical and logistical" support amounted to complicity in an "illegal war".

The remarks came after Rutte said Italy had allowed 500 U.S. military aircraft to take off from American bases on its territory during U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
