Mumbai, July 4 -- The mounting concern over the severe pollution of the sacred Indrayani River has reached the floor of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, with opposition leaders aggressively targeting the state government over the ecological crisis just four days ahead of the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage.
The issue was raised by Congress MLA Nana Patole, who slammed the administration for the deteriorating condition of the river, which serves as a vital site of worship for millions of Warkaris (pilgrims) gathering in Dehu and Alandi. The river, long revered for its sanctity, has recently been seen blanketed in a thick, white, toxic foam, reportedly caused by the discharge of untreated industrial and chemical waste.
