New Delhi, May 3 -- The Indian Women's Press Corps on Sunday marked World Press Freedom Day with a panel discussion titled "Safeguarding Press Freedom Amidst Global Upheaval," bringing together senior media professionals and journalists to examine the growing challenges confronting the press in India and globally.
The event, held in New Delhi, took place against the backdrop of India slipping to 157th position out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders, a decline of six places from the previous year.
Speakers at the discussion flagged the ranking as a matter of serious concern and called for urgent measures to strengthen press freedom and institutional safeguards.
