Bengaluru, Aug. 1 -- Former diplomat Deepak Vohra on Saturday described India's emergence as a major global power as "an act of defiance" against decades of Western stereotypes, saying the country had shattered the image of being poor, dependent and lacking confidence to become a nation that now commands global respect.
Addressing the IMMBue IIIMBAA Leadership Conclave 2026, Vohra said India had spent much of the post-Independence era being viewed through a distorted Western lens.
"From the 1940s to the 1990s, the overriding impression about India was that it was desperately poor, overpopulated, technologically backward, corrupt, malnourished and divided. Today, my rise and rise is an act of defiance," he said.
