New Delhi, May 21 -- As record heat and surging electricity demand continuously test the power system, India hit 265 GW of peak demand at 15:45 hrs on Wednesday, said Disha Aggarwal, Senior Programme Lead, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), in a note.

A 256GW peak demand in the week of May 20 already highlighted how thin the margins are becoming.

"Surplus solar during the day, nearly 190GW of installed coal running at full capacity during the nights with up to 5.4GW of night-time shortage and exchange prices swinging five-fold between solar and non-solar hours," she said on Thursday.
