Chennai, Feb. 1 -- Continuing the government's push in favour of nuclear power to achieve energy security and sustainability and to realise the target of 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday announced continuation and expansion of import duty exemption for nuclear power plants.

Presenting her record 9th budget--Budget 2026-27-- Sitharaman said, "I propose to extend the existing basic customs duty exemption on import of goods required for Nuclear Power Projects till the year 2035 and expand it for all nuclear plants irrespective of their capacity."The announcement is in line with what she had made in her last two budget and also the recent legal actions of the Indian government.
