Sanaa, July 20 -- Iran's Yemen-based proxy militia, the Houthis, announced on Monday that it was imposing a naval blockade of neighbouring Saudi Arabia in retaliation for a recent Saudi-led strike on Sanaa International Airport.

"The Yemeni Armed Forces announce a ban on maritime navigation for the criminal Saudi enemy," Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement carried by the group's Almasirah television network.

He added that the blockade would "come into effect from the moment this statement is announced", although he did not comment on how it would be implemented.
