Washington, May 14 -- House Democrats managed to secure enough signatures with Republican aid to bypass Speaker Mike Johnson and force a House vote on a combined package, introducing new sanctions on Russia while also providing billions of dollars in military and financial aid to Ukraine.

The move marks the eighth time in the past three years that lawmakers from both parties have used a discharge petition to sidestep the Republican leadership and push legislation directly to the House floor, reports Axios.

The latest petition was introduced by Greg Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

It officially reached the required 218 signatures after Kevin Kiley signed on Wednesday.
