Kolkata, May 24 -- The West Bengal government has directed all district magistrates to establish dedicated "Holding Centres" for Bangladeshis and Rohingyas living illegally in the country before they are deported back to their country.
The order, issued on May 23 by the Foreigners' Branch (SAARC VISA Section) under the Home & Hill Affairs Department, instructed district authorities to act in accordance with Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) guidelines concerning the deportation of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas allegedly staying illegally in India.
The proposed centres will also house both "apprehended foreigners" and foreign inmates who have completed their prison sentences but cannot yet be deported.
