Shimla, April 5 -- The Himachal Pradesh government has disbursed Rs 14.68 Cr. under the Gopal Yojana during the financial year 2025-26 to ensure the welfare and upkeep of destitute and stray cattle across the state.

According to an official spokesperson here on Sunday, the amount has been released as a maintenance grant for registered cow shelters and sanctuaries to provide proper care, shelter and nutrition to abandoned cows.

He said the government has taken several measures to address the growing problem of stray cattle, which has emerged as a major concern for farmers. In many areas, stray cattle frequently damage standing crops, causing substantial financial losses to cultivators.
