Kolkata, Jan. 21 -- In an obvious development, the Election Commission of India has indicated that the deadline for hearings and the publication of the final list may be extended, even though no final decision has been taken yet.

The development comes after the Supreme Court issued detailed directions on the publication and verification of voters with "logical discrepancies" in the electoral rolls, sources in the Election Commission indicated.

Presently, the commission has fixed February 7 as the last date for hearings, while the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on February 14.
