Kolkata, July 18 -- West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee on Saturday gave the authorities of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a 48-hour deadline to straighten up after a surprise inspection exposed filthy wards, an idle Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit, vacant beds despite long waiting lists and widespread administrative lapses.

Mukherjee, an oncologist by profession, inspected the Emergency Wing, Trauma Centre, several operation theatres (OT), including the gynaecology OT, and different wards of the state-run hospital in the city before reviewing its overall functioning.

Speaking to The Statesman after the visit, the minister said the hospital had fared "very very poorly" in terms of cleanliness and administration.
