Srinagar, July 22 -- A Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable was shot dead in a terrorist attack in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Wednesday, officials said.

The attack marks the first terrorist strike in the Kashmir Valley since the April 2025 Pahalgam massacre, in which terrorists opened fire on tourists, killing 26 people.

Officials said militants opened fire on Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi near Lal Chowk in Anantnag from a close range, leaving him critically injured.

"The injured policeman was immediately shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for treatment, where doctors declared him brought dead," officials said.
