Panchkula, Aug. 30 -- Private and cooperative stage carriage bus operators in Haryana have opposed the Transport Department's move to invite applications for permits from September 1 without first notifying the maximum number of permits for individual routes, alleging that the proposed process runs contrary to the spirit of an April 8 Punjab and Haryana High Court order and the undertaking recorded before the court.

Dr Dhan Singh, state president of the Stage Carriage Private Bus Operators Welfare Association, said the government should first conduct a scientific survey of passenger load, route capacity, existing bus services and market potential and thereafter notify the maximum number of economically viable permits for each route.
