Chamarajanagar, Aug. 18 -- The Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary killings, in which three men were killed by forest personnel, took a fresh turn on Tuesday with the forest department claiming that the deceased had entered the sanctuary on a hunting expedition and that the firing was carried out in self-defence.
Assistant Conservator of Forests Mariswamy said the three men had allegedly ventured 8-10 km into the sanctuary carrying firearms and hunting equipment.
The official said 34.25 kg of meat was recovered from two bags found around 75 metres from where the three men were killed. The meat has been sent to a laboratory to establish the species of animal.
