Bengaluru, Aug. 14 -- Senior Congress legislator Gurupadagouda Sanganagouda Patil, popularly known as G S Patil, was on Friday elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, after the Opposition chose not to field a candidate.

Pro-tem Speaker T B Jayachandra declared Patil elected through a voice vote amid the ongoing Monsoon Session, giving the ruling Congress a clear victory in the Speaker's election.

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar proposed Mr Patil's name, while Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara seconded the candidature.

The Opposition members stayed away from the election process and did not nominate a candidate, paving the way for Patil's unanimous election.
