Tanagra (Greece), Sept. 5 -- A Greek Air Force F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed during an air show in Tanagra on Saturday afternoon, according to local media reports.

Greek public broadcaster ERT reported that the aircraft crashed shortly before 3 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) under circumstances that were not immediately clear.

An explosion occurred shortly after the crash. An ERT reporter at the scene said the aircraft suddenly began losing altitude before hitting the ground.

The crash occurred just minutes after the Greek Air Force's aerial demonstration began and was witnessed by thousands of people attending the event.
