New Delhi, May 30 -- The government has temporarily exempted all customs duties on the import of cotton from June 1 to October 30, the Ministry of Finance notification said here on Saturday.

"The Central Government, on being satisfied that it is necessary in the public interest so to do, hereby exempts cotton when imported into India, from the whole of the duty of customs leviable thereon under the First Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act and from the whole of the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess" it said.

According to the order, this duty exemption is expected to reduce input costs across the textile and apparel industry, providing relief to manufacturers and consumers.
