Bengaluru, March 12 -- Karnataka BJP President Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Thursday alleged that the state had been pushed into a "debt trap" due to excessive borrowing by the Congress government, sharply criticising the 2026-27 State Budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Speaking in the Karnataka Assembly during the discussion on the budget, Vijayendra said the government's increasing reliance on loans had placed a heavy financial burden on the people of the state.

"The state has been pushed into a debt trap due to excessive borrowing. Repayment of loans along with interest has itself become a huge burden," he said, adding that the rising fiscal deficit was forcing the government to resort to repeated price hikes.
