Shimla, March 5 -- Ending months of political and legal uncertainty, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has given assent to the amendment Bill extending the tenure of the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor and Deputy Mayor from two and a half years to five years.

The Bill, passed by the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, amends the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act and brings the tenure of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Shimla in line with other municipal corporations in the state. With the Governor's approval, the amendment has now formally became law.
