Washington, Aug. 31 -- Tensions between Canada and the United States have taken a new and highly symbolic turn amid their escalating trade war, with Google Maps now displaying Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users in the US, just three days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order ordering the lake's renaming.

This adds a new dimension to growing tensions between Washington and Ottawa over trade. Notably, Canada is the United States' second-largest trading partner after Mexico, accounting for 12.6 per cent of total US trade, according to US Census data.

Google said the change followed the formal renaming of Lake Ontario in the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
