New Delhi, July 31 -- Golden Asmita Dey scripted history for India on Friday, becoming the country's first-ever Commonwealth Games judo champion by clinching the women's 48kg title at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The 22-year-old produced a gritty performance to defeat Canada's Heidi Quach 2-1 by Yuko in a nerve-wracking final that was decided in Golden Score, ending India's long wait for a Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo.
In judo, scoring progresses from yuko to waza-ari and ippon. A yuko is awarded for an effective scoring technique that falls short of a waza-ari, while two waza-ari constitute an ippon, the highest score that ends the bout immediately.
