Washington, May 7 -- Global efforts to track the rare outbreak of Hantavirus linked to a cruise ship off the west coast of Africa are expanding, after health officials confirmed the strain is transmissible, and can spread from person to person, confirms CBS News.

The outbreak centers on the MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, where several passengers fell ill during the voyage and at least three people later died.

According to the World Health Organisation, 12 countries are now monitoring passengers who disembarked from the ship before the virus was confirmed.

Those countries include the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, New Zealand and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
