Aizawl, May 4 -- Pitching Mizoram as a potential powerhouse in India's silk economy, union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh today called for a focused, cluster-based expansion of sericulture in the state, proposing the creation of dedicated "Muga districts" to accelerate growth and farmer incomes.

Singh, who visited the Sericulture Training Institute (STI) at Zemabawk, combined symbolic outreach with policy signalling, planting Som saplings-the primary feed for Muga silkworms-before engaging directly with farmers and weavers in a high-level interaction. He was accompanied by Mizoram's Sericulture Minister Lalthansanga and senior officials from the Centre and the state.
