Siliguri, Sept. 5 -- The Ganga crossed the extreme danger level at Manikchak in Malda on Saturday, further worsening the flood situation in the vast Bhutni Diara area, where nearly one lakh people are stranded by floodwaters.

At around 5 pm, the Ganga was flowing about seven centimetres above the extreme danger level at Manikchak. Several areas of Bhutni Diara, including Kesharpur, Pulintola, Kalutola and Basantatola, have been inundated. Many affected families have taken shelter on the existing embankment, a portion of which has already been washed away.
