Aizawl, May 17 -- A fresh wave of civilians fleeing violence in western Myanmar has once again intensified the humanitarian situation along the Mizoram border, with more than 1,000 people entering Champhai district over the past two weeks and taking the total number of Myanmar refugees sheltered in the state to nearly 40,000.

Officials of the Mizoram Home Department said the latest arrivals, most of them from conflict-hit areas of Chin State, are currently being treated as temporary entrants and are therefore not being included in the ongoing biometric enrolment exercise being carried out across the state.
