Patna, March 21 -- Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey on Saturday said the Health Department is focusing on strengthening antenatal screening to promote safe motherhood and reduce maternal and infant mortality in the state.

He said special emphasis is being laid on early detection of infections such as HIV, syphilis and hepatitis among pregnant women, with screening initiated during the first trimester under a mission-mode approach.

Pandey said the tests are being conducted on the 9th, 15th and 21st of every month under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan.

He said the objective is to prevent transmission of infections among pregnant and lactating women and improve maternal and child health outcomes.
