Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 7 -- In a major breakthrough in cardiac care, doctors in Thiruvananthapuram have successfully performed the first Impella-assisted angioplasty in South Kerala, saving the life of a 38-year-old patient suffering from a complex heart condition.
The patient was admitted to SP Medifort Hospital with severely reduced cardiac pumping function, and investigations revealed blockages in all three major coronary arteries, a condition known as triple-vessel disease, a release stated on Wednesday.
Several leading hospitals in Kerala and Tamil Nadu had advised bypass surgery (CABG). However, as the patient was unwilling to undergo open-heart surgery, he opted for an advanced non-surgical alternative.
