Shillong, Jan. 16 -- The Shillong Government College of Engineering building at Mawlai was partially damaged by a fire that broke out on Thursday morning.
The cause of the fire is being ascertained as a police investigation is underway.
An FIR was lodged by the Principal of the College, C. Marthong, who stated that the fire broke out on the third floor of the College at around 7.24 am.
According to preliminary information, the Principal said, the fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. The blaze reportedly started from a room used by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs for storing sports items/equipment, from where it spread to nearby areas.
The room was locked when the fire broke out.
