Nagpur, May 14 -- A fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Government Daga Women's Hospital here on Thursday morning, triggering panic among hospital authorities, staff and relatives of patients.

However, all newborn babies admitted to the ward were safely evacuated in time, averting a major tragedy.

According to hospital sources, the incident occurred around 10 am in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), where nearly 38 infants were undergoing treatment.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit, which led to heavy smoke inside the ward.
