Mumbai, June 22 -- The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday warned traders and food vendors against using newspaper sheets for packing hot and oily food items, stating that strict legal and penal action will be taken against those found violating food safety regulations.

Officials explained that printing ink used in newspapers may contain toxic substances and heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. When hot or oily food comes into contact with newspaper sheets, these chemicals can potentially contaminate the food. Consumption of such contaminated food may lead to stomach ailments, liver-related disorders and other health complications.
