New Delhi, Aug. 10 -- The Federation of All India Farmer Associations (FAIFA) has welcomed initiatives by the Central Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government to provide relief to tobacco growers facing severe financial stress, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and other southern states.

Tobacco farmers have been grappling with mounting unsold inventories amid weak offtake from global buyers.

FAIFA said the situation has been further aggravated by high taxation on the legal domestic tobacco industry, along with tax-arbitrage-driven smuggling and illicit trade, which have weakened legitimate demand.
