Moradabad, April 2 -- A man accused of demanding Rs 5 crore in extortion from a local exporter was killed in a police encounter late Wednesday night in the Civil Lines area of Moradabad.

The deceased, identified as Ashu alias Monty, a resident of Hapur district, carried a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his arrest. According to police officials, a joint team of the Meerut Special Task Force (STF) and Moradabad police tracked him down near the postmortem house on Islam Nagar Road around 10 PM.

Police said that when officers attempted to surround him, the accused opened fire. In retaliatory firing by the police, he sustained two bullet injuries and collapsed on the spot.

He was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
