Brussels, March 17 -- The European union has signalled it will not rush to back US calls for military support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as the Gulf conflict continues to disrupt global energy flows.
Shipping through the narrow waterway - which is responsible for the flow of about 20% of the world's crude - has slowed down to a near paralysis level amid missile and drone attacks, pushing oil prices higher and raising fears of wider inflation.
US President Donald Trump has urged European allies to deploy naval forces to escort commercial vessels, but Brussels has taken a cautious stance. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc is not prepared to risk further escalation, stressing that diplomatic channels must remain open.
