Srinagar, July 23 -- Tourism development cannot come at the cost of Jammu and Kashmir's fragile ecology, Chairman of the J&K Legislative Assembly Committee on Environment M.Y. Tarigami said on Thursday.

He stressed that environmental safeguards, scientific planning, effective waste management, wetland protection and strict action against illegal constructions are essential for sustainable tourism in the union Territory.

Tarigami said this while chairing a high-level review of the Tourism Department, J&K Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC) and Tourism Development Authorities on Thursday.
