Puducherry, March 16 -- Assembly elections in the union Territory of Puducherry and Tami Nadu are being held on different dates after a gap of 30 years.

Puducherry and Tamil Nadu are adjoining states and to prevent impersonation and casting of fake votes it was a usual practice to hold elections on the same day in both the states.

In 1996, the elections in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu were held on different dates.

While it was held on April 27 in Puducherry and results declared on May 10, in Tamil Nadu polling was held on May 2 1996 and results declared on May12.
