Kochi, July 11 -- The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has warned that the expected El Nino event could trigger intense marine heatwaves, leading to a significant decline in Indian oil sardine stocks and an overall reduction in marine fish production in 2027.
Speaking after inaugurating the Scientist-Farmer Interface programme organised in connection with National Fish Farmers Day, CMFRI Director Dr. Grinson George said the warming associated with El Nino is expected to intensify during October-December this year, with its impact likely to be felt across the northern Indian Ocean by April-May 2027.
