Mumbai, May 28 -- Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid or Eid-ul-Zuha, was observed in Maharashtra with special prayers, ritual sacrifices, family gatherings and widespread messages of peace, charity and communal harmony.

The festival commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to obey the command of Allah and sacrifice what was most dear to him as an act of faith and devotion.

Religious organisations, including the Markazi Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee, confirmed the Eid date following moon sightings, resulting in Eid al-Adha falling on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah on May 28. Following the revised announcement, the Central Government and several state administrations updated their holiday notifications that had earlier been planned for May 27.
