New Delhi, March 17 -- The Election Commission of India has deployed 1,111 central observers for the ongoing Legislative Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry, along with bye-elections in six states, as part of efforts to ensure free and fair polling.

According to an official press note issued on Tuesday, the observers, comprising general, police and expenditure officials, will act as the "eyes and ears" of the Commission during the electoral process. The deployment comes in line with the Commission's emphasis on conducting elections in a violence-free and inducement-free environment.
