Kolkata, Jan. 4 -- : In a major development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought a detailed report from the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) on the alleged attack on election observer C Murugan, citing serious lapses in security arrangements.

In a directive issued on Saturday, the Commission asked the DGP to submit a comprehensive report within 72 hours, detailing all steps taken so far in connection with the incident. The report has been sought by Tuesday evening.

The Commission said Murugan's tour programme had been communicated in advance to the concerned Sub-Divisional Officer and Superintendent of Police.
