Geneva, Aug. 18 -- An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 2,325 people, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.
The outbreak, linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, has claimed 26 more lives than the 2018-2020 epidemic, according to government data cited by the UN health agency.
More than 5,000 confirmed cases have been reported, with the case fatality rate reaching 46%, WHO Incident Manager Thierno Balde told reporters in Geneva via video link from Bunia, the epicentre of the outbreak.
Cases have also been detected in Bas-Uele province, bringing the total number of affected provinces to six.
