New Delhi, June 15 -- Delhi skies darkened as powerful dust storms swept across the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday afternoon, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and damaging winds.

At nearly 4 pm, the weather department issued a red warning, predicting lightning, thunderstorms with gusty winds around 60 kmph and heavy rain at a rate greater than 15 mm/h for several districts of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for the next two to three hours.

Palam weather station logged wind speeds of 93 kmph at 2:30 pm, the highest recorded in the city, according to IMD data released at 3:30 pm.
