Chennai, Feb. 6 -- In what is seen as a big big news in wildlife conservation,the Tamil Nadu government today said the Population estimation of Dugongsundertaken by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in the state in collaborationwith the Forest Department, has estimated a total population of 270 dugongsalong the TN coast.

They included 158 Dugongs in Palk Bay and 112 Dugongs in the Gulf of Mannar,marking the largest Dugong population in India, prompting the TN government toestablish a Dugong Conservation Centre at Manora in Thanjavur District, at a costof Rs 40.94 crore with World Bank Group.
