Nagpur, April 26 -- Facing sharp criticism in Maharashtra, Bageshwar Dham head Dhirendra Shastri on Sunday expressed regret over his comments about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, maintaining that his statement had been distorted on social media.

The controversy began after Shastri, speaking at an event in Nagpur on Friday, claimed that Shivaji Maharaj, weary of continuous warfare, had once contemplated relinquishing his duties and approached his guru Samarth Ramdas Swami with his crown.

Addressing a press conference, Shastri said his remarks were misrepresented and taken out of context.
