Lucknow, March 29 -- Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Saturday issued strict instructions to police officials, stating that registering an FIR in cases where the law provides only for a complaint (private complaint/complaint case) is completely incorrect.

The directive came after objections raised by the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench on this issue.

In his order, the DGP clarified that police often register FIRs contrary to legal provisions. Such actions can benefit the accused in court and adversely affect the investigation process.

Taking the High Court's observations seriously, the DGP has directed all officers to mandatorily verify whether a case legally permits FIR registration before filing one.
